The Empowerment Column (14): “FROM: Get ——- TO: Serve”

Written by Rev. Thabiti

Just about everywhere we find that selfishness has run amuck.  There is a Me-Me-Me, My-My-My and Get-Get-Get attitude all over the place.  A teacher asks a class of 100 adults: Who’s the most important person in the room?  Everyone raises their hand shouting me, me!  The teacher in his loudest voice yells back in response “Noooooooo!!!” and says, “It’s always the person right in front of you and what kind of world would this be if we all came into agreement around this?

Relationships are failing primarily because of this same selfishness.  People approach relationships on the basis of what they think they are going to get, and when what they think they will get doesn’t get gotten, it creates a breakdown in the relationship because someone is now unhappy.  What would happen if we approached each other on the basis of how may I serve, instead of getting?

In turning lemons into lemonade, successful marketing was born from this dilemma because to succeed at marketing anything today requires that you answer the recurring question replaying over and over in people’s heads, and the question is; “What’s in it for me?” Or “What difference will it make in my life?”

The Potluck Theory

If you put 10 getters in a room alone together, no one will get anything.  When you put 10 givers alone in the same room together it becomes a Potluck and everyone in the room receives extra benefit.

“The Greatest Among You Shall Be Thy Servant”

Every day we must wake up with the SOS or Spirit Of Service attitude.  Each day to show our gratitude for this precious gift of life, we now ask and respond to: Who needs my love today or how may I serve?  Do this and the Universe will respond to you in kind.  Do this and your whole world will change for the better.  Do this and you will have tapped into the secret wisdom of the ages.
