Here’s to Your Health: Eating for Spiritual Health

The vegan / vegetarian and raw lifestyle has received much deserved positive attention and credibility in the last few years.  Raw Food and Vegan diets are now the new “cool, in thing to do” now and I am happy to see this. I have been a vegetarian for over 15 years (trying to go vegan) not because it was the “in” thing to do. At that time it was shunned. I became a vegetarian because I believe in non-violence, no killing of any kind, and I also believe it helps deepens my spirituality. I don’t want to digest the energy of fear of the animal and hormones in my body. I believe in peace and love for all and that includes our animal friends. I love knowing that, because I choose not to purchase or consume certain products, I am living in a manner that truly honors and represents my love for animals and for myself.

There is a spiritual perspective to a vegetarian lifestyle that mainstream media has yet to mention. It comes from the idea that all creatures share this planet together. Humans do not own the earth, and it is not ours to destroy. Animals were never meant to be factory-produced for meat and dairy products. Vegatarism from a spiritual perspective involves a commitment to living proactively, not destructively. Our decisions can save our health, save our planet and save the lives of thousands of innocent animals each year.

So, whether we go vegan or vegetarian or raw for health reasons, animal cruelty reasons or environmental reasons, many of us discover perhaps the best benefit of all that we have found Spirit through our choice of diet.  Nature is abundant and gives us all that we need from a strictly plant based diet. No direct killing of any living being is necessary and that this is actually the greatest diet for the mind, body and spirit.

This is how I l ive my life and what I believe to be true to me. Each one of us needs to find and live our own truth. I don’t judge you if you eat meat. However, I do encourage you to explore and be open to a new way of eating that will cause the least amount of suffering in this world.

There are many resources available for those who are interested in learning more about the vegan / vegetarian and raw lifestyle. In the Las Vegas Informer where I am a contributing writer, there are many other writers who write specifially on this lifestyle with ideas for recipes, restarurants, etc. There are many books and other resources on the internet as well.
