gold spikeGold Spike Hotel and Casino, originally opened in 1976, is ending its run on a high-note as a renovated boutique 112-room seven floor hotel-casino. The casino will close at 3 p.m. on Sunday with a party to be held from noon to 3 p.m. which will be open to the public.

The Oasis at the Gold Spike, originally a free standing motel before being sold and becoming part of the Gold Spike resort complex, had the distinction of being the only downtown hotel with a Las Vegas Boulevard address. In May 2010, the city of Las Vegas changed the entire Gold Spike property to the Las Vegas Boulevard address. The adjacent 3-story motel, part of the Gold Spike property, was originally built in 1962 as a 57-room Travel Inn Motel.

After the purchase by the Siegel Group in 2008, the property was completely renovated and combined with the 52-room motel located next to the property. In May 2010, the Oasis Pool opened, giving Gold Spike a swimming pool.

In April 2013, it was reported that the property’s debt had been acquired by Tony Hsieh’s Downtown Project, a campaign to revitalize downtown Las Vegas. Siegel had sold the Gold Spike to the Downtown Project while retaining its rights to the Gold Spike name.

In a news release, Siegel Group said it purchased the property, which included 112 Gold Spike rooms plus 58 rooms in the adjacent Travel Inn Motel, in 2008. Siegel was one of the first investors in the redevelopment of the eastern portion of Fremont Street. After buying the place, he gutted rooms and refurbished the entire structure, the release said, turning it into “a hip boutique hotel-casino that sought to attract a younger demographic that the company believed would eventually migrate to the area.” With the recession continuing, the projected demographics and profits did not happen.

The party will be held at the Gold Strike from noon to 3 p.m. with $1 drinks, 50 percent off of food and giveways. For more information, visit
