Cars and Coffee Las Vegas: Las Vegas’ Weekly Free Car Show

by Jake Conlee

For the majority of my life, I have been involved in the automotive industry. This works well for me, you see, because I LOVE cars. My father was a mechanic for most of my life, and he has introduced to me, every facet of the industry. Attending car shows was one of the earliest memories I have. It was a great bonding experience for any family, especially since it was always a good time, seeing the beautiful mechanical works of art, and the real human emotion of pride and accomplishment. In every direction, people could be seen smiling, laughing, sharing stories and pictures. No matter what your favorite is, there is always going to be someone to share that passion and share a story.

20130316_093929_resizedAmerican car culture is a huge driving force, and is a multi billion dollar industry every year. For those that keep their cars running and as a simple mode of transport, there are those that go above and beyond. This population of people are fanatical about what, where and how they drive. They wash, detail and modify their cars to suit their individual preferences. They preserve the heritage and history of their cars and preen them; as an extension of their own personalities. They take these mechanical works of art and share them with the world. Usually on Saturdays or Sundays.

Every Saturday morning since June 2008, a local gathering has been happening in Henderson of such cars. Cars and Coffee is a weekly showoff of local Hot Rods, Muscle Cars, Exotics and Car Clubs. Taking place from 7-10 a.m. in the 9500 block of South Eastern Avenue, it has always proven to be a great turnout for all makes and models, Bugatti Veyron (1,000,000), Ferrari Enzo (1,000,000), Ferrari F40 (750,000), 1955 Gullwing Mercedes SL (2,000,000), have all been seen. Everything from these Super Exotics and Hypercars, Street Machines, old 1960s Gassers, Hot Rods, Race Cars, Shelby Cobras and Mustangs can be seen in just a single week. Sometimes, I bring out my Audis, and the last time I did, I was parked in a group of Ferraris.

The camaraderie and fellowship of automotive interest and passion is alive and well. This is a place where someone with a million dollar exotic will speak to the owner of a 1960s deadhead VW Microbus with all of the excitement of a fan. It is a great opportunity to meet with the people you see on the street and talk with them about the cars we all drool over.

The location is in a busy Strip Mall on Eastern Avenue. In the center, there are a coupe of places to get a bite to eat, and cup of coffee. There is a creperie and Einstein Bagels, and a bunch of other neat businesses to check out while you’re at the show. If you arrive early enough, and have a nice car to show off, just get there early, parking and show spots are first come first serve, I recommend bringing a lawn chair and a cooler.

20130914_081043_resizedThis group of car fans congregates every Saturday, and it is a simple and costly of stopping by, and going for a walk between the cars. It is one of the only places where there is no admission, but it allows you to get up close and personal. Check out the monster under the hood, look at the luxury (or lack thereof) of the interior, look at the wheels and tires, most owners will even be willing to let you sit in it and take pictures. Though there is an unspoken law: If you want to get in an photograph my car, you must sit an talk with me for a bit. Us “Car Guys/Gals” love talking about our cars. If you’re there and see a Silver Audi, chances are; it’s me. Stop by, and I would love to share some stories and even start it up for you.

Every week, there are many gatherings of cars. In parking lots, at burger joints, at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, all around the Las Vegas Valley. In two weeks, Mandalay Bay Events Center is playing host to the Barrett Jackson Auto Auction and Concours Show, and  Henderson is Hosting the Annual Super Run. Next month, a Group I am affiliated with, Battle Born Quattro is having our Annual Congregation of Audis. Las Vegas loves their cars, and they love to show them off. But this one event, week in and week out, will always be there every Saturday in Henderson, promising to show you something on 2/3/4 wheels that makes you go: “Wow, that’s cool.” If you’re in the area, or just want somewhere cool to bring the family and go for a walk between the cars.
