Choose certified organic foods to improve your health and limit your exposure to chemicals.

Requirements for organic foods are very rigid. In order for foods to classify as certified organic, foods growers and handlers must follow strict guidelines. Certified organic food in the United States is grown and produced according to precise standards set by the National Organic Program.

The Organic Food Production Act of 1990 established the uniform standards for foods labeled organic. The United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Organic Program writes the rules for implementing these standards.

Approved organic farming methods include cultural, biological and mechanical practices that foster cycling of resources, promote ecological balance and conserve biodiversity. Certified organic farming practices do not use toxic synthetic pesticides. Genetically modified seeds are not used. Synthetic fertilizers are not used. Sewage sludge is not used and irradiation is not used.

Organic farming controls pests by introducing beneficial insects, increasing the plants resistance by building up the soil and if needed the application of organically approved pesticides.

The USDA Organic label appears on food that has been produced using approved organic methods. These foods are healthier that conventionally grown foods. Search for organic foods at your local grocery stores and farmer’s markets. Many grocery stores have a specified organic section.

According to a 2001 research article in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine: “Organic Crops contained significantly more vitamin C, iron, magnesium and phosphorus and significantly less nitrates than conventional crops. There were nonsignificant trends showing less protein but of a better quality and a higher content of significant minerals with lower amounts of some heavy metals in organic crops compared to conventional crops.”

Live a healthier, fitter, more functional life by adding organic fruits, vegetables and meat to your nutritional strategies. Choose supplements from certified organic sources to increase the effectiveness of your nutritional strategies.

  1. Your citing of the 2001 study about higher nutritional content in organics has, actually, been challenged by several other studies. Other studies seem to suggest that organics have a higher absorption rate of vitamin and minerals – but it all depends on the context in which the foods are consumed. While I am a huge proponent of organic farming and production, it is due to the reduced exposure to toxins that has me sold on them, not the advantages you note in that study.

  2. Thank you for your intelligent comments, Much appreciated. Limited exposure to chemicals is a huge advantage of eating organic food.
