InSPIRITations – That Special Someone is You!

Yesterday was Valentines Day. I noticed there are two kinds of people you will find on this day. Those who love it and those who hate it. The ones who love it seem to be the ones in a relationship. The ones who hate it are the ones that aren’t.  I have been on both sides.

I started wondering what it is about this holiday that is all about love that has some people dreading and cursing the day. Why do people feel its necessary to be in a relationship with another to enjoy the day? Doesn’t the day represent love, which is universal? Why wait until this day to show how much you love someone?

When I was single, I was one of those people who hated the day as everyone would get flowers at work, talk about their plans and I felt left out. I longed for the day when I would have someone shower me with gifts, flowers, romantic dinners, and so on. Then one year, I decided why should I wait for someone to show me how much they love me. Why don’t I show myself how much I appreciate and love myself by giving myself those gifts. Why should I deny myself this day just because I did not have someone in my life at that moment? If I am expecting that someone recognize how much they love me, then I should recognize that in myself.

So, that year, I set out to create a very special, romantic day for that special someone-Me! I planned for this days ahead of time. What I would wear, what I would do, what I would eat and drink. I bought flowers, wine, chocolates, bath salts, candles. I picked up a very special card at the card store and mailed it to myself so it would arrive on the big day. That night I came home, opened the card up and read it, prepared for the special evening, set the table, lit the candles, poured the wine and ate a very fine meal. Afterwards, I would soak in the bath with my rose scented bath salts, light the candles and take myself away in my imagination. Afterwards, I would get out my journal and write all the things I love about myself and my life. I loved and valued myself and was open to receiving the love I desired and deserved. Interesting enough, the next year, I met my husband. I believe that one of the reasons was because I loved myself first and was open to receiving the love and appreciated and valued myself enough, that it created space for someone to love me.

Valentines Day is over as far as the calendar goes, but it can live on in our hearts everyday. Whether you are in a relationship with someone or not, have that relationship you desire with yourself first. Love yourself everyday and show others you love them too.
